- Died: February 5, 2010, in Austin, Texas
- Dorothy Sawberger Blakey, my mother, died February 5, 2010. Baytown was her birthplace in 1925 to Sarah and Edward J. Sawberger, her workplace at Exxon for over 40 years, the family's gathering place for holidays, and most importantly the place where she met, fell in love with and married John H. Blakey. After retiring from Exxon, they moved to Austin to be closer to us: Luan, Chuck and Blake.
Though she missed her Baytown friends and family, especially visits over coffee and donuts with her brothers, sisters-in-law, and nieces, Austin became home. Her mornings she filled with gardening, visiting with her wonderful neighbors, or volunteering at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center as part of the Wednesday Ladies' Group. Mostly though, she treasured her time with Blake in the afternoons, trying new restaurants with us, and baking cakes and brownies for birthdays.
This last year, smiling became her best activity. This she could still offer and did daily for the lovely, dedicated folks with The Summit WestLake and VistaCare Austin. We appreciate each of you so much: your thoughtfulness, your calm demeanor, and your ready hugs we counted on and still do. Thank you.
Private graveside services will be on Wednesday, February 10, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Seedling Foundation, PO Box 29479, Austin, TX 78755, a favorite group of hers that supports Austin Public Schools.
